In Their Own Words
Residents past and present share their memories of life in Hollis — the schools, the shops, the streets, and the moments that made it home.
Even one detail can help rebuild the picture of Hollis as it was lived. School days, local businesses, block life, church events, and family memories are all welcome.
We had dedicated rooms for music, sewing, and cooking. As part of our last year’s sewing class, we had to make our own graduation dresses. Our principal was Mary Vogt — kind, but stern when needed. We had big assemblies each week that began with a prayer, the pledge, and the Star-Spangled Banner; the boys had to wear white shirts, and there was a baby grand piano in front of the stage. Each class put on plays. There was a movie theatre on Hollis Avenue, and Krisch’s Ice Cream parlor — which later moved to Massapequa, where it still is today.
