Notable Residents of Hollis — Ja Rule: early influences followed by a related hip-hop feature

Ja Rule — born in Hollis, Queens — became one of the defining voices of early 2000s hip-hop. Raised in a strict Jehovah's Witness household where popular music was forbidden, he secretly discovered rap and knew immediately what he wanted to do. From Hollis to the top of the Billboard charts was not a straight line, but it was a Hollis line — the same neighborhood ambition that ran through LL Cool J, Run-DMC, and Irv Gotti, who discovered him.

A Hollis Beginning

Ja Rule was born Jeffrey Bruce Atkins on February 29, 1976 (a leap-year child) in Hollis, Queens. He was raised largely by his grandparents as a Jehovah's Witness after his mother worked long hours. According to his biography, he was born at 197th Street and 99th Avenue, and attended P.S. 35Q (the Nathaniel Woodhull School) and I.S. 109. His father left the family when he was young, and his younger sister died when he was five. The circumstances were hard, but Hollis was the neighborhood, and Hollis had a way of producing ambition from difficulty.

He gave himself the name Ja — from his initials, Jeffrey Atkins — and a friend added Rule. By his early teens he was rapping seriously, drawn into the orbit of a young DJ from the same neighborhood who would become Irv Gotti. The two formed the group Cash Money Click, which caught the attention of DMX and later Jay-Z before Ja Rule signed with Def Jam.

"Coming from Hollis, Queens, it's not the darkest place you could grow up, but it's definitely not the brightest place, either. We got some suburban life there, some houses there, and it kind of feels like it's a better neighborhood — but then two blocks away it's Hollis Avenue, where there's crack and drug dealers." — Ja Rule, Connecticut Public Radio interview, 2014

The Voice of Murder Inc.

Ja Rule's signature raspy delivery and knack for combining hardcore rap with pop hooks made him one of the most distinctive voices of his era. With Irving "Irv Gotti" Lorenzo, also from Hollis, he built Murder Inc. Records into a powerhouse that dominated the early 2000s charts.

His debut album Venni Vetti Vecci (1999) went platinum. His next two albums, Rule 3:36 (2000) and Pain Is Love (2001), both debuted at #1 on the Billboard 200 — a feat achieved by only a handful of hip-hop artists. His collaborations with Jennifer Lopez ("I'm Real," "Ain't It Funny") and Ashanti ("Always on Time," "Mesmerize") became some of the biggest pop-crossover hits of the era.

From Hollis to the Charts

Ja Rule's rise was rapid. After appearing on Jay-Z's "Can't Get With That" and DMX's "Ruff Ryders' Anthem," he released his debut album Venni Vetti Vecci (1999), which peaked at #3 on the Billboard 200 and went platinum. The album's lead single "Holla Holla" became an anthem and introduced his signature aggressive yet melodic style.

Rule 3:36 (2000) debuted at #1 on the Billboard 200 and was certified triple platinum. Pain Is Love (2001) also debuted at #1 and was certified triple platinum. His fourth album, The Last Temptation (2002), debuted at #4 and went platinum. Over his career, he sold over 20 million albums worldwide and received four Grammy nominations.

His biggest hits included "Between Me and You" (featuring Christina Milian), "I'm Real (Murder Remix)" and "Ain't It Funny (Murder Remix)" with Jennifer Lopez, "Always on Time" with Ashanti, "Mesmerize" with Ashanti, and "Wonderful" with R. Kelly and Ashanti. These songs dominated radio and MTV, defining the sound of early 2000s hip-hop and R&B. In a 2025 interview, he confirmed that he and Ashanti have only three or four songs together — "Mesmerize," "Always on Time," and "Down for You" — noting that fans often believe they have many more.

Beyond Music: Acting, Business, and Family

Ja Rule also pursued acting, appearing in films such as The Fast and the Furious (2001) as Edwin, Scary Movie 3 (2003), and Assault on Precinct 13 (2005) alongside Ethan Hawke and Laurence Fishburne. He also starred in the reality television series Follow the Rules on VH1 (2022), which documented his life with his family.

In 2021, following a federal prison sentence for tax evasion, Ja Rule released his first studio album in nearly a decade, CP4 (The Rebirth of Tha King), signaling his return to music. He has continued to tour and perform, maintaining a loyal fan base, including performances with Ashanti.

During the pandemic, Ja Rule created the Icon Live App, a platform that allows content creators to monetize their content in real time through tips from fans. The platform has since expanded into the Icon Network and is available in the Apple App Store. He has also launched a whiskey and wine line called Amber and Opal, featuring honey whiskey and honey coconut flavors.

Ja Rule has been married to his high school sweetheart, Aisha, for over two decades. They met at the Sunrise Mall in Queens, and their Moto Photo booth picture remains a cherished memory. He credits her with knowing him as "Jeff" while the world knows "Ja Rule," providing stability throughout the highs and lows of his career. His son, Jeff Jr., is a taller version of him and shares his distinctive deep voice.
